- 2. With a gentle lip lift in good light, observe (never probe): breath odor, visible calculus, a red line at the gumline, broken or discolored teeth.
- 3. Record eating-behavior signs: dropping food, chewing one-sided, pawing at the mouth, drooling, reluctance with hard food.
- 4. Coach the daily-brushing standard: introduce over 1-2 weeks (taste the paste, then finger, then brush), aiming at the outer surfaces, seconds per side to start.
- 5. Where brushing is truly refused, select VOHC-accepted adjuncts and record them as adjuncts, not substitutes.
- 6. Route any disease sign to a veterinarian for a proper anesthetized oral exam; record that no home scaling or anesthesia-free service was used or planned.
- 7. Set the recheck date and the next veterinary dental due date.

What is promised, and what is not
