Steps

  1. Get the center manager's consent for the planting layout before starting.
  2. Confirm the planting site is utility-cleared and record a GPS waypoint inside the posting radius.
  3. Photograph the planting site before digging, showing the bare ground.
  4. Select healthy nursery stock and record the fruit species, variety and rootstock.
  5. Dig the planting hole and set the tree so the root flare sits visible at grade.
  6. Photograph the planted tree from the same vantage, showing the root flare at grade.
  7. Apply mulch 2 to 3 inches deep around the tree, held off the trunk.
  8. Form a watering basin around the tree and water it in.
  9. Post the 'community orchard, free to harvest when ripe' sign and photograph it.
