  1. 1. Walk the home's defensible-space zone with the resident and identify high-flammability shrubs (resinous, oily, or dense evergreen species) within 5 to 30 feet of the structure, photographing them before removal.
  2. 2. Remove the identified high-flammability shrubs by hand or with hand tools, staying clear of the foundation and any utility line.
  3. 3. Plant a low-flammability native replacement species (broadleaf, high-moisture-content, well-spaced) in the cleared area at the design spacing.
  4. 4. Water in the new planting and photograph the finished defensible-space zone from the matching before vantage, recording species removed and installed.
