Steps

1. Observe each animal from the side and rear for overall shape, then palpate the rib cage, spine (backbone prominence), hooks and pins, brisket, and tailhead for fat cover, following the Herd/Sprott descriptions for each of the 9 score levels.
2. Assign a whole-number score 1 (severely emaciated) to 9 (excessively obese); most healthy range cows fall in the 4-7 range, so use the full scale honestly rather than clustering scores near the middle.
3. Record each animal's score with ID and current reproductive stage (pre-calving, post-calving, or breeding season) -- the target changes by stage, so context matters as much as the number.
4. Compare each animal's score against the herd's prior round to track a trend, not just a snapshot.
5. Flag any cow scoring <=4, especially within roughly 60-90 days of calving, for a nutrition/ration review with the herd veterinarian or a beef-cattle nutritionist -- early enough in the calendar that a feeding change can still affect the next breeding season's outcome.
6. Note any down, lame, or visibly sick animal for immediate veterinary attention, ahead of finishing the routine round.
7. Log the full round (all scored animals, dated, reproductive stage noted) and route flagged animals per the decision rules.
