Four findings, credit-first

Every figure below is a verbatim quote from hmgroup.com's own live pages (checked this session) or a cross-referenced fact from our previously-banked, independently-verified Frontier Climate recon. Nothing here was requested, reviewed, or endorsed by H&M Group.

The bottom line, in plain English

No jargon. H&M Group's targets are real and credited below; the one clean, actionable gap is worth naming plainly.

An agent-discovery file → the shoppers and analysts whose AI is checking H&M Group's climate claims read the real targets, not a guess

hmgroup.com serves nothing for an AI to read first, so an assistant asked about the 2030/2040 commitments paraphrases scraped pages instead of the company's own SBTi-verified wording: a one-file fix that puts the real numbers in the answer.

SBTi-verified 2030 and 2040 targets, quoted verbatim

H&M Group's own goals-and-ambitions page states two dated, quantified, third-party-verified targets. The 2040 target is explicit that residual emissions get balanced with permanent removals: not a vague net-zero gesture, a named mechanism.

“Reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 56 percent against a 2019 baseline [by 2030]. Achieve net-zero by reducing absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 90 percent against a 2019 baseline, and balance out any remaining emissions with permanent carbon removals [by 2040]. Both goals have been verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative.”Source: hmgroup.com/sustainability/leading-the-change/goals-and-ambitions/, live 2026-07-16

SBTN-aligned land targets, own newsroom headline

H&M Group has gone a step further than most Frontier members by also adopting land-specific targets under the newer Science Based Targets Network framework: a distinct, harder-to-game commitment than emissions targets alone, since it covers biodiversity/land-use impacts a pure carbon target can miss.

Context

Frontier membership is the mechanism behind H&M Group's own 2040 wording, not a side gesture

H&M Group joined Frontier Climate's buyer coalition in 2023 (independently confirmed in our banked Frontier recon against Frontier's own member-logo markup, alongside Autodesk, JPMorgan, and Workday). Frontier's entire product is durable, permanent carbon removal: exactly the phrase H&M Group's own 2040 target uses for its backstop. That makes the membership load-bearing to a headline public commitment, a stronger and more specific claim than “H&M Group supports carbon markets” would be.

Gap

llms.txt: a real, honest 404. /.well-known/*: a wholesale WAF block, not a per-path signal

hmgroup.com's llms.txt (the file AI assistants read first) returns HTTP 404 with a body byte-identical to a nonsense-path control (132,749 bytes, same WordPress 404 template): no soft-200 deception, a clean gap. Separately, every /.well-known/ path tested (agent-card.json, security.txt, and a nonsense control path inside that same namespace) returns 403 uniformly, with and without a full browser User-Agent. That uniformity (control included) means it's a platform/WAF rule blocking the whole /.well-known/ namespace, not evidence about any specific file's existence; worth stating precisely so the finding isn't overstated.

The honest EWP intersection

H&M Group's own 2040 target already writes the sentence that makes permanent carbon removal load-bearing: “balance out any remaining emissions.” The labor that shrinks how much ever needs balancing (in-store and online mending/repair intake, resale-grade sorting for take-back programs, garment-recovery logistics) is real, bounded, everyday work with no receipt layer of its own today. EWP's proof packet (photo + geofenced GPS + one-time signature, settled on-chain) is proposed as exactly that receipt, sitting next to the removals ledger, not competing with it, and never implying H&M Group has seen or requested this concept.
