Steps

1. Photograph each pit as found; note compaction, trash, and whether the trunk flare is buried.
2. Clear trash and weeds by hand; free any girdling material that lifts away without cutting bark.
3. Hand-fork the top 2–3 inches to relieve compaction, working around roots; expose the trunk flare.
4. Lay a 3-inch mulch ring keeping a gap at the trunk, water 15–20 gallons, and photograph the finished pit.
