Humboldt Bay has the fastest relative sea-level rise on the U.S. West Coast, and during winter king tides the water already reaches over low spots along Eureka's working waterfront. The city needs a dated photo record of exactly where the water reaches each season so drainage fixes and shoreline projects go where the water actually goes, not where a map guesses. Check a tide table and pick a king-tide or highest-tide morning for your visit. 2. Walk the public boardwalk and street ends between C Street and the foot of Del Norte Street, staying on pavement. 3. At each low spot, photograph the water line against a fixed landmark like a piling, curb, or rail. 4. Note the time, tide height from the table, and whether water is over any path or pavement. 5. Repeat the same route each visit so photos compare season to season. 6. Upload all photos with GPS location and date to complete the record. Steps
- 1. Confirm post-event conditions are safe; navigate to the site; record GPS.
- 2. Photograph deposited sediment / affected area.
- 3. Measure deposition depth at representative points.
- 4. If a sediment contaminant screen is in scope, run the metals field kit and record values.
- 5. Note debris, hazards, and the extent (sketch).
- 6. Enter depth, any analytes, hazard notes, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Unstable ground / submerged debris / contaminated water -> document from safe footing; do not enter.
- Elevated metals in deposited sediment -> flag before any reuse; recommend lab confirm.
