intermediate work · Bus stops along 7th St / Highway 46 corridor, Wasco, CA 93280
Plant shade trees beside the bare bus stops on Wasco's main corridors (2026-07-18)
Riders in Wasco wait for Kern Transit buses on bare concrete pads in full valley sun, some of the hottest waiting anywhere in the county. A shade tree planted beside each invited stop turns a punishing wait into a bearable one within a few summers. This is permanent public cooling for the price of a tree and a shovel. Standard: CAL FIRE Urban and Community Forestry + transit-stop shading practice; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action. Proof: Per-stop planted-tree photos plus species log with GPS/date Method (CAL FIRE Urban and Community Forestry + transit-stop shading practice; SDG 11 Sustainable Cities, SDG 13 Climate Action.): 1. Confirm the approved planting spot beside each stop and call 811 before digging. 2. Dig, plant, and basin a drought-tolerant shade tree with the root flare at grade. 3. Mulch the basin, water deeply, and install a simple trunk guard against string trimmers. 4. Note each tree's species and stop location in the log. 5. Photograph each planted tree with the stop visible and record with GPS and date. Done when: Per-stop planted-tree photos plus species log with GPS/date
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it. Typically 30–60 minutes. Method of record: i-Tree canopy / street-tree inventory
Bring
- GPS phone
- DBH tape or measuring tape
- tree ID reference
- camera
- hi-vis vest
Steps
- 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
- 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
- 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
- 4. Count vacant planting sites.
- 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
- High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
What counts as done
- Per-tree species + condition + DBH recorded
- Vacant planting sites counted
- GPS waypoint per tree
- Photo per surveyed tree
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
