Expand the compacted tree wells along a Woodland east-side street

The street trees on Woodland's east side are boxed into tree wells so small and compacted that the roots have nowhere to grow, and the trees show it in thin, stressed canopy. Expanding each well gives the roots — and the shade they provide — room to actually establish. Mark the expanded well boundary around each existing tree pit. 2. Remove the compacted pavement or hardscape within the marked boundary by hand tools. 3. Loosen the exposed soil with a hand cultivator, staying clear of visible roots. 4. Spread 2-3 inches of mulch across the expanded well, keeping mulch off the trunk. 5. Water each expanded well slowly until saturated. 6. Photograph each expanded well from the same angle as a before photo. Done when: Before/after photo of each expanded tree well

Steps

1. 1. Walk the corridor; record a GPS waypoint at each tree.
2. 2. Photograph each surveyed tree.
3. 3. Record species (best estimate), condition class (good/fair/poor/dead), and DBH (diameter at breast height).
4. 4. Count vacant planting sites.
5. 5. Enter the per-tree records, vacant-site count, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.

If it does not match the plan

• Dead or hazardous tree observed -> flag for the responsible agency (no removal by surveyor).
• High vacant-site count -> recommend a planting plan for the corridor.
