A segment of the Stornetta bluff-top trail is actively eroding at its seaward edge, undercutting the tread and threatening to narrow or close a public trail on this California Coastal National Monument unit. ASSESS: with the BLM/State-Parks trail crew supervisor, walk the eroding trail-edge segment and confirm which sections are stable tread vs. an actively undercut/crumbling bluff edge; photograph the segment as found. 2. 2. Stage erosion-control matting and anchor stakes; work only from the stable tread side, never standing on or leaning over an undercut edge. 3. 3. Roll out and anchor the matting flush to the trail tread, staking it at the spacing the manufacturer/crew plan specifies so it will not lift in the next storm or high-wind event. 4. 4. VERIFY: tug-test each anchor point, photograph the finished, secured matting from the matching before vantage, and flag any section too undercut to safely matt for a licensed geotechnical follow-up. Done when: before/after photos + anchor tug-test log + matting-area spec + GPS

Steps
- 1. Check the tide table; plan to work the low tide; tell someone your plan and return time.
- 2. Navigate to the habitat edge; record GPS waypoints along the patch/edge.
- 3. Photograph the meadow/marsh at low tide.
- 4. Record shoot/stem density per quadrat and estimate patch extent (or edge scarp height for marsh).
- 5. Note condition (epiphytes, dieback, wrack) and adjacent land use/armoring.
- 6. Enter density, extent, condition, GPS, photos into the proof record; sign.
If it does not match the plan
- Soft mud / rising tide -> stop and retreat; safety over data.
- Edge retreat or heavy dieback observed -> flag for living-shoreline / protection planning.
