Steps
- 1. Restrain the calf calmly in a chute or headgate; approach quietly to avoid stress that can transiently elevate temperature or respiratory rate.
- 2. Take a rectal temperature and score 0-3 per the WCHSC bands (0 = normal, rising scores for progressively higher fever).
- 3. Observe and score cough 0-3 (0 = none, 3 = spontaneous repeated coughing).
- 4. Observe and score nasal discharge 0-3 (0 = none, 3 = copious mucopurulent discharge).
- 5. Observe and score eye appearance 0-3 (0 = normal, 3 = heavy ocular discharge or eyelids partially closed from illness).
- 6. Observe ear/head carriage and score 0-3 (0 = normal, 3 = drooping ear or head tilt).
- 7. Sum all 5 category scores to a total; a total of 5 or more flags the calf BRD-positive per the validated threshold.
- 8. Regardless of the numeric total, flag any calf showing depression, reduced nursing/feed intake, or isolation from the group for a veterinary look -- the system's real sensitivity (71.1% disease-level) means roughly 1 in 4 true BRD cases score below the threshold.
- 9. Route any BRD-positive or otherwise-flagged calf to a veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment; log the full round (all scored calves, category scores, total, date) for trend tracking.
