Steps
- 1. Confirm the colony has fledged and left for the season, with no adult or young martins seen at the housing for at least a week, before starting.
- 2. Crank or lower the pole from the ground using its winch or telescoping mechanism; the pole is never climbed.
- 3. Open each compartment, remove old nesting material by hand, and brush out debris; photograph the emptied compartments.
- 4. Close and latch every compartment entrance so no bird can enter over winter, then raise the pole back up.
