Steps
- 1. Confirm the tower has been empty of swifts for at least two weeks after the local fall migration window before opening the cleanout door.
- 2. Open the hinged base panel from ground level; a ladder is never used and the tower shaft is never entered at any point.
- 3. Remove accumulated droppings and old nest material through the base opening with a hand tool, wearing gloves and an N95-style mask for dust.
- 4. While the panel is open, shine a flashlight up the shaft from the base to confirm the interior ledges and surface are still intact and gripping-rough, note any smooth or damaged section for a licensed builder to address later, then close and latch the panel.
