Steps
- 1. Once each year, before the next expected fruiting season, inspect every log in the stack: confirm its tag is still legible with species and inoculation date, and check the wood's firmness by pressing a thumb into the bark.
- 2. For a log still firm and within its first three to five years since inoculation, schedule its next cold-water soak and fruiting flush following the same soak-and-harvest rung used every prior season.
- 3. For a log that has gone soft, spongy, or crumbling, or that has passed roughly five years since inoculation, retire it from the fruiting stack; set it aside as spent wood rather than continuing to soak it for a flush it can no longer reliably produce.
- 4. Record which logs were refreshed for another season and which were retired this year, and photograph the current stack with the updated tags, keeping the record current for next year's check.
