Steps
- 1. Stack the plugged, waxed logs off bare ground on pallets or a simple rack, in a crib or log-cabin pattern that keeps air moving between logs, in deep shade under existing tree canopy or a shade structure the resident already has.
- 2. Attach a weatherproof tag to each log recording its species, the inoculation date, and the earliest possible fruiting date roughly six to twelve months out, and photograph the labelled stack.
- 3. Check the stack monthly: confirm the logs stay in shade and off the ground, and if the wood feels dry, mist or lightly water the stack (never soak it) to keep the bark from drying out during incubation, logging each monthly check.
- 4. Watch for and record any log with cracked bark, unusual odor, or a competing mold; set aside any log showing visible white spawn colonization on a cut test-plug end as a good sign, and keep every log's tag current through the entire incubation wait.
